Assessment Procedures:

Grassroots Competitive (U8-U11)

This process applies to returning players, who were registered with Phoenix FC U8-U11 Tier 1, 2 or 3 for this past indoor season. This is for information purposes and is subject to change.

January:

  • All volunteer coaches to complete team evaluation spreadsheet and coach end of season feedback form by February 4th, 2024. Coaches should also submit their end-of-season feedback forms by now so we know who can return for the next season.

February:

  • Program directors will begin meeting with coaching groups to determine pre-assessment spot offers.
    • A spot offer is a confirmed roster spot based on player performance over the season. Player spot offers will be determined through consensus between tech staff and volunteer coaches.
  • Program directors will have final decisions if a consensus cannot be reached. Spot offers can only be offered to returning players who have registered in RAMP and taken advantage of our early bird registration pricing as of February 29th.
  • To accommodate new players, 30% of roster spots must be kept open for every team. Team organization scenarios will be determined based on registrations as of March 1st, 2024.
  • Returning players who register on or after March 1st, or who only register for the assessment only package will be placed on teams after assessments.
  • Our goal is to have a spot for every returning player, though for some this may mean our tier 4 level if we do not have sufficient players to form enough teams at the competitive tiers.
  • A list of returning volunteer coaches will be available to parents just prior to assessments, but coaching roles will not be made official until team organization and selection is complete.
  • Families should be talking with volunteer coaches during this time about their player development and their tier recommendations for the outdoor season. If necessary, families should not hesitate to contact the program director with questions or clarification.
  • As always team organization is tentative and subject to change based on changes in player registration. Spot offers are club based not team based. In the competitive stream, we cannot guarantee placements with a specific coach or with specific teammates.
  • New for this Outdoor Season - Underage Player Selection Guideline - As our grassroots program grows in numbers, we have had to reflect on our practices involving the selection of underage players on teams. These decisions always try to consider what is best for the player given the context of the situation. For now, underage players who want to play on a tier one team will only be selected based on being a top five player on that team roster.

March:

  • Program directors to email spot offers to returning player families on March 4, 2024. Families are to accept offers by written email no later than March 6th, 2024.
  • A reminder, players offered a tier two or three spot can still be selected for a higher tier team based on assessments.
  • Assessments will take place between March 9-14, 2024. Assessments will be run by returning volunteer coaches, with independent technical staff and program directors doing the evaluations.
  • All players are expected to attend and participate in assessments to provide the necessary competitive environment. Our goal is to finalize rosters for all teams within seventy-two hours after the scheduled 2nd assessment.
  • Should conditions arise where a third assessment is required for an age group, this will be communicated via email at the time of that decision.
  • We recognize that assessments can represent a time of change or uncertainty for our athletes and their families. We urge athletes and families to focus on what they control.... Work Hard, Do Their Best, and support their teammates both new and old.
  • Every season represents the chance to write a new chapter. We are one club, one community growing and learning together.

Youth Competitive (U13+)

Please note our assessment process and approximate timelines as we head into our 2024 outdoor season. This process will apply for our returning players, who were registered with Phoenix FC Youth Programming Indoor 2023/24(U13-U17 Competitive, Performance, and Performance +) and, for the most part, players wanting to be assessed from outside our club.

February:

Program Directors have now collected player and team assessments from our various coaching staff for the 2023/24 Indoor Season. Our next step is to begin having conversations with the players and families and providing some feedback regarding their season. We will focus on those players that we felt have found their current environments/teams a real challenge. We have identified a handful of players we feel would benefit from leveling up (moving up an age group or tier) and will discuss with the players and their families.

For a vast majority of the current/returning players from our Indoor Youth Program, we feel they are best suited in continuing with their programs and teams. These players and their families may not hear from the Program Director directly, but instead get some feedback from their respective coaches.

The Program Directors, through their involvement in training and match play, along with the coach provided assessments, have a strong sense of each player and their current level of play. This knowledge and information will help us through the outdoor assessment process for our athletes and programs.

We strongly encourage our current players and their families to have conversations with their head coaches and coaching staff regarding their player’s development throughout the season. If necessary, families should not hesitate to contact their program directors with questions, clarification and recommendations going into outdoor.

March - Assessments

The goal of our assessments is to ensure we are placing our players into the correct program (i.e.  competitive vs performance vs performance+) and environments (teams), one that is enjoyable and challenging for the player. We assess the players based on the four pillars of development - technical, tactical, physical, & mental/social. We also recognize that, although we try our best, that we may get this wrong on occasion. We appreciate your understanding in advance. Based on assessment, we begin to formulate teams and rosters.

Assessments will be run by returning volunteer coaches, independent technical staff and with the Phoenix FC Program Directors doing the evaluations. All players are expected to attend and participate in assessments.

Our goal is to finalize rosters for all teams within 24-48 hours after the 2nd scheduled assessment. Should we need a third assessment for an age group/program, this will be communicated via email at the time of that decision.

We understand that this can be challenging process and period for both our athletes and their families. Remember to focus on what can be controlled…working hard, trying your best, and supporting your teammates, both new and old. We are excited about the upcoming outdoor season; we are one club, a club for our community, looking to grow and learn together - Phoenix FC!

Please note that our Phoenix FC Youth Program will not be offering “spot offers” to players.

Please do not hesitate to contact our club staff for any support or clarification your athlete or family requires.
